How to grow thick & strong hair

Sometime in mid-2014 is when I stopped perming my hair for good. I didn’t do the “big chop” and truthfully I regret it.

I let the perm grow out naturally instead, cutting it along the way. The reason I regret it is because I would have had substantial growth by now. But I believe everything happens for a reason. When I stopped perming my hair the thing that I didn’t do was stop applying heat to my hair. That is where I messed up at.

My hair was growing but it wasn’t flourishing the way it is now. I can absolutely tell the difference. I never understood why my hair at the time wasn’t getting thicker, or longer. I wasn’t really seeing any dramatic growth because I kept applying heat.

Here are some pictures of my natural hair. No perm BEFORE the chop.

Very first professional blow out after all the perm grew out…

Months after… it started growing but wasn’t very thick

After some months I thought I would cut it so it would grow back healthier… at this point, it did appear to be better but was still very thin.

October 2017 is when I decided to chop it all off and start over FRESH. I was nervous because I was natural for the last 3 years and it just felt like wasted time.

Chopping my hair off and starting fresh was just what I needed!

I’m FINALLY seeing some REAL results!

If you are like me and let your perm grow out and aren’t seeing the results you want after trying many, many different products you may just want to chop it all off and start over!

What I think is the MOST important thing in seeing results is NO HEAT.

It’s been 8 months now and I haven’t applied any heat to my hair and honey…

It is more thick and healthier than EVER!

More than likely I will go many more months maybe even a year or so without applying any heat at all.

I actually didn’t intend on posting this because this was my first time doing this style and I didn’t have the right hair products or the right headband. My hair was pretty dry here as well but don’t mind it! Will post a better one once I get the right products! I also slept on it lol… Just showing you guys the thickness!

The products I find BEST to use to achieve thick and full hair are…

  1. Wild growth oil–  Apply 3 times per week, massage in the scalp. You can mix both together in a separate bottle or just buy one. I use the white bottle.

Wild Growth Set (Hair Oil 4 oz + Light Oil Moisturizer 4 oz)

2. Jamaican black castor oil-  This product is very thick and has a sticky like texture. When applying, I pour about a quarter size (x 2) in my palm and distribute throughout making sure I get my ends and massage in my scalp. I usually do this 2 times a week.

This stuff right here is the TRUTH! It grew my hair very thick very fast!!

You can also use a clean mascara brush, dip it the castor oil and apply to your eyelashes or eyebrows for fullness as well!

3. Coconut oil-  Coconut oil is like a must-have, honestly, YOU NEED THIS. Coconut oil nourishes and conditions the hair stimulates the growth and gives you length! Use as an everyday moisturizer.

Nutiva Organic, Cold-Pressed, Unrefined, Virgin Coconut Oil from Fresh, non-GMO, Sustainably Farmed Coconuts, 15 Fluid Ounces

4. Olive oil-  I have never used olive oil as apart of my regimen but my aunt has and she has seen a lot of growth using this with a combination of other products.

What you need to do is warm up olive oil in the microwave for a few seconds and pour it into a bottle that has a nozzle.

Apply before you are about to wash your hair as a hot oil treatment and put on a shower cap for 20-30 minutes then wash it out.

As far as shampoo, I use only…

Cantu- I wash my hair once every two weeks and I do not apply any heat.

Cantu Sulfate-Free Cleansing Cream Shampoo, 13.5 Fluid Ounce

When detangling my hair after I shower I use this leave-in conditioner and it makes the whole process a lot easier!

Cantu Argan Oil Leave in Conditioning Repair Cream, 16 Ounce

Shea moisture-  Definitely one of my favorites! I use Cantu when I’m on a budget lol. But this shampoo is amazing and it doesn’t leave my hair dry and it doesn’t strip it! Also smells really good

Overall tips:

-Do not over wash your hair. That strips the natural oils which are needed for growth.

-Keep your hair moisturized but don’t over moisturize. You can clog your scalp and then your hair won’t grow!

-Trim when necessary ( I haven’t trimmed in 8 months, not necessary!)

– Keep a consistent regimen.

-NO HEATTTTT!

-Keep protective styles.

-If needed start FRESH. BIG CHOPPP!

    1. My pleasure ☺️
And I would say it varies on your hair type. People with more kinky hair don’t need to wash as often because it strips our hair and dries it out which causes breakage.
But people that have a finer grain of hair, more than likely doesn’t affect them the same. You just have to go by your hair type and texture!

Overall though, I don’t think it’s necessary or healthy for anyone to wash their hair every day lol. Your hair needs natural oils and moisture and time to absorb them.

  1. I am a fairly new naturalista—I stopped perming last May and I big chopped in September. It’s been really hard for me to figure out when to cut my hair to achieve consistent growth, lol. I did a trim last month but I didn’t straighten my hair so who knows what really happened. Thanks for the great list of products! I need to grab a bottle of that hair oil!

    1. Your welcome!!! Being natural was really hard for me in the beginning, I almost went back to perms lol.
But after awhile I started to get the hang of it and experimenting with different products to find what worked! Definitely get the wild growth oil and that castor oil!!! That will do it!!!

  2. I’m glad that I have no love for styling my hair too much and using hairdryers and all ..And now I’m more serious about my hairs , I use coconut oil on the ends and sometimes on wet hair and keeps it for a day or two …The effects are magical you can try . I loved the way how you mentioned all the essential oils out there …

    1. Yeah me either! I’m not applying any heat to my hair for the rest of the year. I keep basic styles so I don’t have to do it often.

  3. love this! good advice! I use cantu to wash my hair but other than that I don’t put any oil or anything in my hair. I’ve always had super long hair and every time I cut it, it grows back even faster. this time I did the big chop I was so sad I was bald lol. I culdn’t do nothing with my hair….but my hair grew back fast and now I want to cut it again.

    1. I know me too! For 3 years after I chopped my hair the first time I was seriously struggling to get growth. That’s why I chopped it October. And it’s flourishing! I hope it works out for you! And thanks sis💫
